All About Our Honey

The honey used in Capilano-branded products is premium Australian honey sourced from a network of over 600 Australian beekeeping families.

We abide by strict Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) regulations to ensure the honey we pack is high quality, safe and great tasting for our consumers.

Our Receival Process: When honey is received, it goes through primary testing to establish its moisture content, colour and flavour. We then perform quality assurance background testing in our on-site laboratory, the only one of its kind in the southern hemisphere. Following this, it is grouped by flavour and variety by our Master Honey Taster, who’s been profiling honey at Capilano for over 40 years! We do this to ensure each pack of Capilano retains the same delicious flavour that our consumers know and love.

Our Packing Process: When packing honey, we only ever gently warm it (if required) in order to filter the product, thus removing debris and naturally occurring crystals, giving the honey a sustained liquid life. From our years of honey expertise, we’ve learned that Aussie families love honey that’s easy to decant, which is why we offer them a product that will retain its golden, viscous consistency. Other products, like our Raw Unfiltered and Organic ranges do not go through this process. These latter products offer a more rustic honey for consumers who do not mind slight debris or the natural process of crystallisation.

No, honey is denser than water and will weigh in differently. 1kg of honey, is not the same as 1kg of water. Honey is sold by weight, and not volume and this is something to keep in mind when using honey in your recipes.

For a product to be labelled as organic, it must be sourced solely from organic certified beekeepers and packaged according to organic standards.

Our Certified Organic honey is primarily sourced from the coastal ranges of Northern New South Wales and from south-west Western Australia. Certified Organic beehives are often placed in National parks and State forests with naturally occurring native flora.

Sourced from pristine Australian landscapes, all our organic honey is independently certified organic by Australian Certified Organic (ACO), the local independent certifying body for organic products.

ACO audit organisations such as Capilano Honey’s parent Company Hive + Wellness Australia to ensure the Australian organic standard for honey is complied with.

Organic certification specifies source of the nectar, foraging area, bee management, honey extracting process, transportation, processing temperature and packaging materials.

With regard to international organic honeys, for those to be certified as acceptable they have to meet the same regulatory standards as Australia, which are commensurate and authorised by ACO. Therefore, international honey meets the requirements set by Australian Organic Standard or it is simply not approved.

Other such international organic standards for honey include the USDA and the Canadian Organic Regime.

When stored in an airtight container away from heat and direct sunlight, honey will not spoil or go ‘off’. In Australia an expiry date is not required to be labelled on honey products, so our honey has a packed on date ink-marked onto our jars and squeeze packs. In some international markets, the local labelling laws require us to nominate an expiry date, which will be marked on the container accordingly.

Capilano honey is 100% pure Australian honey. There’s absolutely nothing added, it’s just as nature intended.

Honey is best stored in the pantry in cool, dry conditions away from direct sunlight. Always ensure your lid is properly sealed and contains no honey residue on the outside, to prevent attracting insects.

As a natural and seasonal product, sometimes the aroma, colour, thickness and flavour of our honeys will change a little depending on how much rain, drought or simply due to which flowers our bees have been foraging on over the season. This is completely normal and the beauty of enjoying pure honey, straight from the source.

No. Capilano honey does not contain imported honey.

All honey used in Capilano-branded products is 100% pure Australian honey sourced from our network of hard-working Australian beekeeping families.

No. Capilano honey is pure Australian honey and does not have anything added to it, meaning it does not contain added sugars of any type.

Capilano honey is not heat treated, unless it is required by law in the state or country we are selling into. As you might have noticed, when the weather is cold, honey becomes quite thick and hard to pour! So when it is cold and the honey turns thicker, we gently warm it to a maximum of 45 degrees for a very short time to help us pack this completely natural, pure honey into our jars and squeeze packs. Our gentle honey filling process ensures that all of the naturally occurring micronutrients, enzymes and taste of our honey is preserved. What goes in our packs is just as nature intended.

Capilano honey is gluten free. In addition to this, no gluten-containing products are handled or stored in our packing facilities.

Capilano does not label domestic products with Halal Certification, however it is a requirement of some of our export markets. Since 1953, Capilano has developed exports markets in over 35 countries around the world. Halal compliance is a market requirement for some international customers and this is simply a market access issue. Export is a crucial component of our business and helps the profitability and sustainability of our business and that of our local Australian beekeeping suppliers.

Honey is generally considered safe for children aged 12 months and older. Please seek the advice of a qualified medical professional and follow their recommendations if you are unsure.

All About Manuka

Rich in phenolic compounds, Manuka honey boasts strong antioxidant properties. It also contains essential minerals, trace elements, vitamins, proteins, and enzymes, making it a natural remedy for soothing sore throats, aiding digestion, and boosting energy. Embrace the natural wonders of Manuka honey for a healthier lifestyle.

The Leptospermum plant only blooms once a year for 4-6 weeks, creating a rare amount of Australian Manuka available in market each season. This brief flowering window makes Manuka honey an incredibly special product. Australia’s flowering season is highly dependent on whether conditions such as heavy rainfall, droughts or cooler temperatures which will impact pollen production and bee foraging activity- leading to variations in supply from season to season. It also has incredible benefits for your body due to its bioactive properties.

MGO is the centerpiece of the Australian Manuka Honey Association’s honey rating system. It’s short for Methylglyoxal (MGO), a naturally occurring chemical in honey. Active Manuka Honey is sold with varying levels of antibacterial activity which is why MGO is ranked from 30+ up to 2000+. Higher MGO values reflect increased activity levels.

  • Our warmer climatic conditions mean that Australian Manuka Honey has a much longer liquid life so it can be enjoyed in a natural liquid state without the heavy creaming process, typically required for New Zealand Manuka Honey, as their floral species is prone to developing large unpalatable crystals.
  • Our Manuka honey is independently tested to ensure authenticity and potency of its active antibacterial properties.

  • Capilano do also offer a range of creamed manuka products in jars for those who prefer this texture and packaging format.
