what is manuka honey?

Manuka honey is produced by bees that have foraged on the flowers of Leptospermum trees, natives to Australia and New Zealand. While New Zealand has just one variety of Leptospermum, Australia is home to over 80 species of Laptospermum, which contributes to the smooth, pleasing flavour of Aussie Manuka. Manuka honey has been used by native Australian and Māori cultures for thousands of years.

What’s the difference between manuka honey and regular honey?

Manuka honey contains a heightened stable form of natural antibacterial activity. Considerable research has been undertaken to determine the cause of this activity, which is attributable to the naturally occurring chemical Methylglyoxal (MGO). All Capilano Active Manuka Honey is independently tested to guarantee its Methylglyoxal (MGO) content, the key natural active compound responsible for the unique properties of Manuka honey.

What does MGO mean?

Some types of Manuka honey are what we called ‘active’ and have higher antibacterial properties than regular table honey. This is thanks to a component in Manuka honey called Methylglyoxal (MGO). MGO comes from an organic compound in the nectar of some of the Leptospermum trees called dihydroxyacetone (DHA). It is worth noting that not all Manuka honey is considered ‘active’, so it’s important to check the label when purchasing Manuka honey.

MGO is the centerpiece of the Australian Manuka Honey Association’s honey rating system. It’s short for Methylglyoxal (MGO), a naturally occurring chemical in honey. Active Manuka Honey is sold with varying levels of antibacterial activity which is why MGO is ranked from 30+ up to 2000+. Higher MGO values reflect increased activity levels.
